Why (ground) water matters?

Althought there are no debatible arguments of the significance of freshwater sources for humankind and its influence on the health of many ecosystems, many water issues remain firmly as critical: improving water quality, eliminating dumping, minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, etc. While its use is still the main source of freshwater in many aspects such as agriculture, groundwater also feeds springs and streams, supports wetlands, maintains land surface stability and contributes to serving human water needs. However, the overuse of groundwater can cause temporary or permanent declines of aquifers, and many countries might reach critical conditions in the near future.
